David Hazelett Announces Retirement
Hazelett Strip-Casting Corporation announces the retirement of long-time President David Hazelett effective December 31, 2024 and the transition of David’s management responsibilities to the offices of Co-Managing Directors Dave Diederich and Jim St. Germain.
David will hold the title of President Emeritus as of January 1, 2025. Hazelett wishes to thank David for his many years of devoted service and contributions to the success and growth of the company and wishes him many more productive years in his retirement.
David has served as Hazelett’s second-only President since 2009, following his father, Bill Hazelett. David led Hazelett out of the financial crisis and under his leadership Hazelett established its Chinese subsidiary, introduced its successful two-meter-wide aluminum casters to the market and embarked on its promising CASTechnology™ development. In 2019, David presided over Hazelett’s celebration of the Hazelett family’s 100 years in continuous casting. He initiated a technical relationship with Ebner Industrieofenbau that led to Hazelett becoming a member of the Ebner Group in 2021. He received the Boultinghouse Award, the North American aluminum industry’s highest award, in 2023.
Dave Diederich joined Hazelett in 2003 and has served as its VP, Finance, for the past 15 years. A CPA by training, Dave’s interests and strengths are much broader than financial.
Jim St. Germain came to Hazelett in 2021 as VP, Engineering. With a solid management and technical background in the automotive and defense industries, Jim has largely transformed Hazelett’s engineering department.
Hazelett, along with the entire EBNER organization, congratulates Dave and Jim and is confident that, under their leadership, Hazelett will continue to innovate and prosper.
Aluminium Düsseldorf 2024 Exhibition
At the Aluminium Düsseldorf 2024 Exhibition, the EBNER GROUP showcased its expertise of the aluminum industry. In addition to a comprehensive range of solutions across all group members, the focus was on new products and technologies: optimized furnace entrances for floating and roller hearth furnaces, the HICON booster for floating furnaces, and the HICON roller hearth furnace for thin plates. Furthermore, a temperature measurement unit for floating furnaces, the HICON plate heater, and the SEC Box, which was also available to win, were presented.
Hazelett and MINO shared a booth in the Casting and Rolling Hall. The conference was very well attended and allowed us to meet new members in the industry who were not aware of our technology.
Hazelett Celebrates 105 Years of Continuous Casting
Hazelett has been designing and manufacturing continuous casting machines for the global metal industry since 1919. This 105-year milestone was commemorated on July 20, 2024, during its annual summer picnic at Hazelett’s beach on Lake Champlain.
Hazelett technology is used in metal manufacturing processes worldwide to cast aluminum, copper, zinc, and lead into metal strip and bar used to create countless products. Today, over 100 Hazelett® twin-belt continuous casting machines are operating in more than 24 countries.
C. W. Hazelett commercialized the world’s first continuous casting machines in the 1920s. He dedicated his career to advancing this technology, introducing the twin-belt caster in the 1940s. Upon his death in 1956, his sons R. William (Bill) and S. Richard (Dick) incorporated the business and located it in Vermont, with Bill serving as President until 2009 when his son, David, took over its leadership.
The company has grown to over 150 skilled employees utilizing nearly 100,000 square feet of buildings in Colchester, Vermont. Hazelett twin-belt continuous casting machines, as well as critical spare parts, are designed and manufactured in these specialized facilities. Hazelett has an experienced team of engineers and technicians supporting its customers worldwide.
Hazelett became a member of the EBNER Group, headquartered in Leonding, Austria, in 2021 through the acquisition by EBNER of a majority interest in Hazelett.
First Annual EBNER Convention
Representatives from Hazelett, CASTechnology, and Hazelett Trading (Taicang) attended the first annual EBNER Group Convention in Austria. The attached picture shows the team in the entrance to the EBNER headquarters. It was a very busy week of group meetings on various strategy topics such as full aluminum solutions provider, North American strategy, collaboration, and communication among EBNER groups, and much more. It was a great event to establish face-to-face connections with many people we have only interfaced with through Teams or by phone. Hazelett was well represented and led many projects and conversations.
New CA1070 Caster Order!
Hazelett has secured an order for a CA1070 twin-belt caster designed for the copper anode industry. The caster will be utilized in the wire industry where pure copper is required. The caster has a projected capacity of 55 tonnes per hour.
Our client, who has become a leading enterprise in the industry, ordered their first caster in the late 1960s. That caster is still in operation today. The new caster, expected to deliver in the fall of 2025 will replace their near 60-year-old caster.
