METALLURGICAL INTERN

We are seeking a Metallurgical Intern that will work alongside the Metallurgist and Lab Specialist while they learn new skills and execute a research project. They will gain knowledge of the metallurgical aspects of the Hazelett® Twin-Belt casting process and knowledge of various metallographic and mechanical examination techniques used in industry.

DURATION: Mid May - Mid August

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Learn and understand a niche and interesting process for nonferrous metal solidification.

  • Develop laboratory skills for metallographic sample preparation and mechanical property testing.

  • Research and solve problems in a manufacturing environment.

  • Apply the knowledge you are gaining in school in a practical setting.

  • Have ownership over a research project, design and implement an experiment and produce a report of the findings.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • Pursuing a BS or MS in Material Science Engineering, Metallurgy, or Chemical Engineering. The ideal candidate will have completed 3 years towards their degree

  • Must have a basic understanding of the grain structure of metals and its impact on their mechanical properties

  • Should understand the basic science of ceramics and refractories.

  • Must be familiar with mechanical testing.

  • Must understand and follow laboratory and chemical safety

  • Attention to detail

  • Experience with data collection and visualization

  • A willingness to learn

  • Must have thorough and organized work habits. 

  • Able to discuss findings and report on them in clearly written reports.

  • Energetic, innovative, and open-minded in the consideration of new solutions and metallurgical challenges.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The duties of the Metallurgist will primarily be carried out in a laboratory environment. Safety rules must be followed both in the laboratory and on the production floor, which include the use of safety glasses, gloves, protective coats, etc.  Must be able to work on the production floor, which might include occasional exposure to fumes, noise, and gases from equipment or machinery. Occasional light lifting may be required.
